AFSSA was created to change that. We deliver an impartial, structured, condition-led assessment that gives organisations a clear, evidence-led understanding of their flooring risk — and a credible way to demonstrate due diligence to boards, insurers, regulators and the public.

Clarifying the use of "Standards" within AFSSA
AFSSA stands for Annual Floor Safety Standard Assurance.
The word "Standards" within AFSSA reflects our commitment to promoting higher standards of floor safety, condition management, documentation and asset stewardship across the organisations we serve.
AFSSA is not a regulatory authority, standards-setting body, certification authority or accreditation organisation.
AFSSA does not create, publish or enforce British Standards (BSI), ISO standards, statutory regulations or legal requirements.
The term "Standards" refers to AFSSA's mission of encouraging a structured, consistent and documented approach to floor safety management, condition monitoring and ongoing maintenance planning.
AFSSA's methodology has been developed to support organisations in recording floor condition, identifying observations, maintaining evidence trails and demonstrating proactive management of flooring assets.
AFSSA documentation is intended to support an organisation's wider governance, risk management and asset management activities. It does not replace statutory duties, legal obligations, regulatory requirements or professional advice.
AFSSA's objective is simple: to help raise the standard of floor safety awareness, documentation and condition management through a structured and repeatable annual assurance process.
Sonny Webb
Founder, AFSSA
AFSSA was founded by Sonny Webb, drawing on more than 17 years of commercial flooring experience across the UK. Sonny has worked extensively with housing providers, schools and academy trusts, NHS and private healthcare organisations, hospitality groups and commercial property estates — gaining first-hand insight into the practical realities of flooring safety, condition and risk.
His specialist knowledge spans flooring failures, repairs, safety risks, durability and compliance considerations — combined with a deep understanding of how flooring decisions impact day-to-day operations, occupant safety and long-term asset performance.
AFSSA was created from a clear conviction: that organisations deserve an independent, structured way to assess and demonstrate flooring safety — and that the flooring sector benefits when safety standards, repair quality and accountability are raised together. Sonny continues to lead AFSSA's framework development and is committed to improving flooring safety standards and industry best practice across the UK.
Alongside the development of AFSSA, Sonny is continuing his professional development through formal health and safety studies, including NEBOSH, to further strengthen the framework's risk management and safety-led approach.

The AFSSA Signposted Contractor Network is an independent signposting initiative developed to support clients in sourcing competent flooring contractors. It is designed to deliver consistent repair methodologies and quality-focused repair solutions aligned to the AFSSA framework.
The network is being developed on a nationwide basis over time, giving organisations a future-facing route to identify and engage contractors who share AFSSA's commitment to standards, safety and accountability.
AFSSA does not sub-contract, supply or sell flooring works directly — the network exists purely to signpost competent providers and remains independent of any contractor relationship.
