About AFSSA
What is AFSSA

The independent framework for flooring safety

AFSSA — Annual Floor Safety Standard Assurance — is an independent UK framework that helps organisations identify flooring risk, demonstrate due diligence and improve safety standards through structured annual assessment.

Every assessment is delivered by an independent, competent assessor. Findings are recorded photographically and presented in a clear, evidence-led report that supports defensible decision making across single sites and national estates.

  • Reduce slip, trip, hygiene and structural flooring risk
  • Strengthen due diligence for boards, insurers and stakeholders
  • Improve consistency across single sites or full estates
  • Year-round support through certification, action logs and guidance

The Framework

The Four Assessment Categories

Every AFSSA assessment evaluates flooring against four structured risk categories — covering the conditions that most often drive accidents, claims and operational disruption.

Slip Risk

Surface contamination, polish, wear and transitions that increase the likelihood of slipping in everyday use.

Trip Hazards & Edge Integrity

Lifted edges, damaged thresholds, sudden level changes and worn nosings that create avoidable trip risks.

Hygiene & Contamination Risk

Conditions that compromise cleanability, infection control and chemical or biological contamination management.

Floor Integrity & Condition

Long-term performance issues — cracking, delamination, hollow spots, sub-floor failure and accelerating wear.

How The Process Works

A clear, structured pathway to assurance

From initial enquiry through to annual certification, AFSSA delivers a transparent four-stage process built around independence, evidence and accountability.

  1. STEP 01

    Enquiry

Share your sites, scope and timing. We confirm assessor availability and provide a clear, fixed-fee proposal.

  2. STEP 02

    Assessment

An independent, competent AFSSA assessor visits site to deliver a structured, condition-led evaluation.

  3. STEP 03

    Report

Receive a detailed, evidence-based report with photographic findings, risk ratings and prioritised actions.

  4. STEP 04

    Certification

On passing the standard, your site is issued the AFSSA Annual Certificate of Floor Safety Assurance.
